St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Volunteer
I was born and raised in a rural area of Illinois. After High School graduation I attended KY Baptist School of Nursing in Louisville. There I met my Husband and we were married in 1961. We moved to Huntsville at that time and have been residents of Huntsville ever since.
I have 2 living children, Lana Downs an accountant in Lagrange KY and Randy Grubbs, a neonatologist in Ft Worth, TX.
Most of my career as a nurse has been as a Surgical Nurse and Supervisor. I did sandwich 6 years in the middle of my career to work with both BC/BS and Humana Insurance for a little diversity!
In 1966, our son was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor, a malignancy of the kidney which I will talk about. It was during that time, we became very familiar with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We have been both supporters and volunteers with St Jude since 1968.
I work with the local GFWC duMidi Woman’s Club to provide items for the Treasure Chest, pizza parties’, sickle cell party and Christmas party at the local St Jude Affiliate Clinic.
I work with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an ambassador to local groups and organizations to help raise awareness about the services available at the Hospital.
I also am part of the Huntsville/Madison County Walk/Run Committee to help form teams, solicit sponsorships and raise awareness through the Walk in Huntsville.
